Lance Durban We have all heard the occasional anti-U.N. peacekeeping presence rant. Obviously there are a few people who feel strongly on this issue... but I would submit that they are a very small and ignorant minority.
One can argue about whether the 8000+ foreign troops in Haiti could be doing more to help the country... the

From: Michael VanHook Needs exist all over Haiti, not just isolated pockets. The Nordest Department has been largely ignored until recently. It makes a lot of sense to start a project there because it borders the DR. Before the road was paved and the CAP customs office was overhauled, getting supplies there was the best, maybe the only option.
I applaud them and anyone who wants to make this

35453: Hermantin responds to Pomerantz why didn’t Irish rebuild
From: leonie hermantin Dear Gigi:
Why not Gonaives, because I suspect that undertaking such a project in an urban
center would have been a logistical nightmare which would have taken years to
complete.
From what I understand the Irish found/acquired 14 acres of land and built
the community without any any support from the government. I believe that
the Haitian government has

From: leonie hermantin I do not mean to speak for Mr. Gourgue, but I think that what he is referring
to is the fact that many of the deportees are being sent back, not because
they have broken any US laws or have any committed crimes of moral turpitude,
they are returned to Haiti because their claim for asylum was ultimatly denied.
I am sure that Mr. Gourgue was not referring to the

From LeGrace BensonRe: 35439
"Haitian peasants may not be thinking for themselves but someone should; ifnot directly for the peasants but
for Haiti as a whole."
The presumption that Haitian peasants do not and probably cannot be thinkingfor themselves is an old and apparently quite durable opinion. It does notaccord with the facts. Worse than that: Haiti has had an on-going afflictionof Complete article

From: leonie hermantin To Auguste and Stockdale:
I don't even know how to respond to these patronizing and incorrect statements made about Haitian peasants being people who "are not thinking, don't plan for tomorrow, only believe in instant gratification... etc"
"But in the peasant culture in Haiti (there is probably a proverb for this)
there is nothing but the present--tomorrow's LIFE is

From: The Stockdales I agree with Ms Benson. The person to whom I responded did not seem to be taking "real life" into account. It is not as simple as saying that they have to get a clue. They have one. Perhaps my last statement was more to the point--it is easier to come by trees than cash.
